Pet Shop Boys – Fundamental (Parlophone)
Drop the “fun” from the title and just call it Da Mental, because this was the most moronic CD I’ve heard all year. On first listening, I almost puked; after the second and third listening, I almost chucked it out the window. Then I realized that this is partly a film score, but mostly a soundtrack for a gay musical, and I hate musicals. Ever since the girls put on their own successful musical in London’s West End, they obviously think they are the next Andrew Lame Webbers. The first single, “I’m With Stupid,” will go down as the worst single of the year, but Da Mental shouldn’t be locked up so fast – it does have one or two surprises, such as “The Sodom and Gomorrah Show,” that prove that PSB still have their wits. An unconfirmed rumour has it that the PSB will be performing at Fashion Cares.

Dimitri From Paris – In the House of Love (Defected)
Once every few months, a CD comes along that is so fucking brilliant that it makes you forget about all the crap released every day. Dimitri, who is actually from Turkey but was raised in Paris, got his start in the early ’90s with a massive remix for Björk and has since carved a niche for himself as a soulful disco enthusiast with a huge following in Toronto. His latest compilation is a three-CD disco house retrospective heavy on rare ’70s classics along with nuggets of brilliance spread out over the last 35 years. It includes Grace Jones’s best performance in “La Vie en Rose” as well as a sinful remix of Pete Heller’s “Big Love,” Sylvester, Black Box and Jocelyn Brown.

Q & A with R. Kelly Clipperton

In preparation for the Kelly and the Kellygirls CD launch on May 27 at El Mocambo, Tunes spoke to singer R. Kelly Clipperton.

Tunes: Your first single, “Napoleon,” from your new disc We Love You, But Not as Much as We Love Ourselves, seems a fitting first single, since Napoleon was quite self-absorbed. What is it about him that fascinated you?

Kelly: Are you saying I’m self-absorbed? ... Oh, the album title! Well, the fact that Mr. Bonaparte was a crazy, neurotic genius...felt comforting.

T: Again with the French theme: the second song of the disc is named for Catherine Deneuve. Would you agree that she is one of the very few straight women who both fags and dykes would want to fuck?

K: Certainly! And I think everyone would look better for it.

T: What kind of lay do you think she’d be?

K: Not a lot of talking going on, smoking certainly, some brandy... I imagine the exercise would take the better part of an afternoon.

T: You’ve just finished a six-city tour of Ontario. How are the boys different in Windsor than in Ottawa?

K: I love our fab fan base everywhere and am truly appreciative of its expanding numbers...but the boys in Windsor need to stop sniffing everything they see dusted on a table...

T
: Is it important to have a sexy band with you?

K
: Oh, absolutely. We do monthly Brazilians, poise classes, colonic irrigation, fake bake, and occasionally I let them speak.... after I’ve told them what to say.

T: If you auditioned for Canadian Idol, what song would you perform that best represents you?

K: “You Light Up My Life” or anything from Anne Murray’s brilliant back catalogue

T: Do you think host Ben Mulroney is a top or bottom?

K: Heels to the ceiling for sure...but he’d still be twitching his head and moving his hands too much.
