I began writing for fab in 2007 while I was studying broadcast journalism at Ryerson University. I was hired as an intern to write the Misc Things column, but when that column was scrapped, I was reassigned to the Together column. I was hesitant at first because I had just gone through a breakup and didn’t know if interviewing happy couples would be the best thing for my self-esteem. But I looked beyond that and began searching for boyfriends, husbands, common-law partners and any happy pairing that wanted to share their story.
I’ve enjoyed my time with the magazine, but now I’m focusing on other projects I have on the go. Before I leave I’d like to share what I learned while writing this column. It’s quite simple: I’ve learned that love happens when you least expect it. Some of my favourite couple stories are from the people who met by accident. They didn’t use websites or Grindr. The person they ended up with was their barista at Starbucks, the stranger they saw tanning by a pool, the guy they fucked at a bathhouse and decided to take home to continue the party. These are just a few examples of couples from my column that I know are still together. I’ve realized that you can’t search for a type. You have to give all kinds of people a chance, because you never know with whom you will click.
Thank you, fab, for being the longest relationship I’ve ever had.
With love and venom,
Heroine Marks
