'We balance each other’s personalities and are very in sync.’

Together: Doug & Aidan - Nine years

It was fate that brought Doug and Aidan together 10 years ago at the Rainbow Ridge campground. Aidan was supposed to go there with a guy he was dating; he was dumped four weeks prior to the trip but went anyway. Doug, who wasn’t supposed to be at the campground at all, showed up on a whim.

Playing the part of an assertive, drunk Casanova, Aidan approached Doug, who was tanning by the pool. “He was not impressed,” Aidan says. “Doug left the pool area, and I asked around to see if anyone knew him. Someone told me his name was Gary and that he was leaving.”

Aidan asked his fellow campers to convince “Gary” to stay and attend the dance scheduled for later that night. He soon discovered his crush was actually named Doug. Aidan asked Doug to dance, and during Lionel Richie’s “Angel,” a spark ignited.

After working up a sweat, the two stepped out for some air and began chatting, only to discover they both had kids from previous marriages. “We ended up talking for over two hours,” says Aidan. Despite living in different cities, they gave dating a chance. It paid off, and they are preparing to celebrate their 10th anniversary in August. Aidan describes the key to their relationship: “We balance each other’s personalities and are very in sync,” he says. “We are pretty basic people with a won- derfully balanced life.”
