A fresh-faced new you

Making your skin ready for spring

01.27.2012

We are in the throes of winter and, despite the nicer-than-average weather, the reality is we get less daylight and long, cold nights. This is a time when gay men can get cozy at home and prepare to emerge recharged and refreshed come spring’s thaw. Many people believe a rejuvenation program must begin with a visit to a glossy, high-end spa, but that’s not your only option. It can start with just a few simple things you do throughout your day. Start off 2012 right by getting into a skincare regime that, when combined with exercise and a healthy diet, will help you heat up the spring with a fresh new look.

Morning
1. Scrub
Invigorate yourself by having your coffee while you shower. Lush’s Sonic Death Monkey shower gel, made with coffee, chocolate and lime juice, will zap you awake while it moisturizes. When you think you can’t face another Monday morning, this will have you tossing out your old soap bar and rushing out the door. $10 for 100 ml. Available: Lush, 312 Queen St W or lush.ca
2. De-age
Protect one of the most vulnerable parts of your skin with Elizabeth Grant Anti-Aging Face Cream. Not just another tube of youthful promises, this active skin treatment uses the antioxidant powers of mushrooms and Japanese green tea to fight the signs of aging. $60. Available: elizabethgrant.com
3. Moisturize
Vaseline Men, just like the commercial says, is absorbed in less than 15 seconds without leaving a greasy feeling. The extra-strength version is great for all-day hydration and beating that 3pm winter- skin scratch attack. $7. Available: Shoppers Drug Mart locations

Afternoon
Your skin’s natural oils are both good and bad. They are great for fighting aging, but too much oil can block your pores and cause blemishes. To avoid looking spotty, splash some warm water on your face and pat your face dry. If your skin feels dry, reapply a dab of moisturizer.

Evening

Remember, one of the most effective times for healing and building new skin is while you sleep. Clarins’ scientists have formulated their Extra-Firming Night Cream to work while you sleep, restoring your complexion while preventing the deepening of lines. One jar will last two to three months. $88. Available: Clarins Skin Spa, 87 Yorkville Ave, clarins.ca

Once a week
Since ancient times, the healing and relaxing properties of baths, whether rosewater or milk, have been touted. The easiest and quickest option for immersing yourself in something beneficial comes courtesy of Lush’s Geo Phyzz bath bomb. Made of Hawaiian sea salt and oils, it will scrub your skin and leave it soft while calming your mind. $5. Available: Lush, 312 Queen St W or lush.ca
Dine with designers
Cabbagetown’s Winchester Kitchen & Bar will play host to Bustle Clothing’s Shawn Hewson and Ruth Promislow, who are hosting a fundraising dinner event there on Tuesday, Jan 24. Proceeds go to Wear White 4 Windfall. Hewson, who is a spokesperson for the cause, wants guests to wear white and be fab. The cost is $50 per person for a three-course meal, or $65 per person for a three-course meal with wine pairings. Call 416-323-0051 or email info@winchesterkitchen.com for info.
