A new queer art space in Kensington - ready to blow your mind

10.17.2012

Playwright/filmmaker Jordan Tannahill and his partner, actor William Christopher Ellis, are opening a storefront cinema and performance space called Videofag in Kensington Market (187 Augusta Ave). The intimate and flexible venue - a former babershop they renovated together - will be dedicated to the creation and exhibition of video, film, new media, and performance with a queer, Toronto focus.

Videofag launches Friday, October 19 at 8pm with Kids On TV: Hidden Histories & Spectacular Misfits, a three-week exhibition celebrating Toronto's apocalyptically gay art collective (and Fab cover models!) and their impact on music, art, and queer identity over the last ten years. This is the first major retrospective of the band's music videos, costumes, photographs, posters, and multiples.

The October 19th launch party will feature an immersive video installation by KOTV, music off their forthcoming album Pantheon, and the announcement of Videofag's exciting fall/winter programing.

Highlights of the upcoming season include: a one-night retrospective on the short films of Cree/Métis artist Adam Garnet Jones (November 3), The JK Trilogy, three videos about our infamously queer-friendly Minister of Immigration Jason Kenney by performance/video-artists Sharlene Bamboat and Alexis Mitchell (November 23), and a daring new project from acclaimed trans performance artist Nina Arsenault (December 13-16) .

Videofag aims to be an inclusive hub for experimentation and discourse among media artists of all ages and backgrounds. It will also grant numerous residencies (up to two weeks in length) to artists from a variety of disciplines to create and showcase new work in progress. Get into it!
