Underground designer goes underground

Christopher Bates' new line is available in the basement at Homegrown Boutique

02.03.2012

A relatively new menswear designer has emerged on the Yorkville scene in a very unusual venue. Homegrown Boutique on Cumberland Ave is a basement-level, blink-and-you'll-miss-it shop that carries only Canadian designers. Homegrown has just introduced its first menswear line with Christopher Bates, a local designer with an underground following. The store currently carries only Bates' shirts and pants, but the full collection will be available soon.

Bates' shirts are made from cotton and are sewn to give a fitted look. The fitted pants have unfinished seams, which Bates recommends his clients have hemmed. Each garment has Bates' signature scorpion sewn somewhere on it. He has taken a chance with this collection, offering men a unique twist on the basic dress shirt and pants.
