Paris Is Burning explores the underground world of ball culture in 1980s New York City. This flamboyant, outrageous scene is contrasted with the lives of the African-American, Latino, gay and trans community members Livingston talks to, many of whom faced discrimination, poverty and violence.
Ball culture is still alive and well. For instance, Kiki Ballroom Alliance in Toronto takes the stage by storm every month or two.
