Gary Taxali goes Royal Mint

Max MacDonald finds some stylish coinage for his pocket

01.26.2012

Hipsters from the worlds of fashion, culture and the arts packed into The Spoke Club to celebrate legendary illustrator Gary Taxali’s collaboration with the Royal Canadian Mint. Taxali has created a series of six coins -- themed Birthday, Wedding, Tooth Fairy, New Baby, O Canada and Holiday -- for the Mint's 2012 gift sets. The coins feature pop culture imagery rendered in Taxali’s instantly recognizable retro-graphic style. The words "25 Cents," "2012" and "Canada" are rendered in the Chumply font that Taxali designed, the first time the Mint has allowed an artist to change the typography on coins.

The 2012 Royal Canadian Mint Gift Sets and Tooth Fairy Gift Card will soon be available for order from mint.ca, and shipping will begin in February 2012. These products will also be available in the Mint’s boutiques in Ottawa, Winnipeg and Vancouver, as well as through dealers and distributors, including participating Canada Post outlets. Each coin, engraved with the artist's initials, is considered a collectible piece of Taxali art.
