Gentlemen, the day has finally come: dessert is now good for us. Rejoice!
Thanks to the good people at Tori’s Bakeshop
in the Beaches, one can now purchase green cupcakes infused with spirulina
– a salt-water plant rich in iron that boosts the immune system, reduces fatigue and improves cardiomuscular functions – and a full dessert-detox menu.
"I bake things that taste good and promote health. Everyone is doing the detox here at the bakery now,” owner Tori Vaccher explains. Together with Joy McCarthy, a holistic nutritionist, the pair create healthy foods that should be very bad for you.
Also included in this miracle detox menu are doughnuts, banana bread and cookies, all baked with non-refined sugar, coconut sugar and flaxseed. The trick, Vaccher explains, is making the wholesome ingredients come together into something delicious. Like dessert in disguise.
Vaccher hopes to influence kids and their love for desserts in a positive, offering a fun environment for families to shop and maybe even taste their “first gluten-free doughnut.”
Looking to expand in the city, Vaccher is eyeing the west end and dreams of opening a wine bar featuring. She’s already working on more detox-y things, like soups and energy bars.
Take a trip to the east side and visit the shop. You’ll find an adorable and helpful staff dressed in matching bow ties and shirts, ready to make 2013 a healthy and delicious year. — Corrado Bruzzese
